Dean West
With his meticulously staged tableaux, Dean West (*1983) has become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary conceptual photography. The Australian-born artist trained at the Queensland College of Art. His series have been shown at institutions such as the Columbus Museum of Art, the Clinton Presidential Center and the Franklin Institute. His works are held in the Møller Collection and in Sir Elton John’s photography collection.
West’s scenes look like everyday moments yet are choreographed down to the last detail. Strict symmetry, idealised light and carefully constructed compositions give them a heightened, almost cinematic reality. Drawing on Edward Hopper, David Hockney, Jeff Wall and Stan Douglas, he works in series such as »American West« and »The Palms«. Across these, single images build into layered narratives about culture, social issues and human relationships. In 2024 CAMERA WORK Gallery presented his first solo exhibition in Germany.
International curators have taken note of the skill with which West combines digital photographic technique and complex, cerebral narratives. His works have been exhibited at major venues around the world, including the Columbus Museum of Art (2012), Discovery Times Square in New York (2014), Faneuil Hall in Boston (2015) and Paris Expo Porte de Versailles (2015). Hailed as one of the most promising artists of his generation and as one of the most accomplished practitioners of digital image-making as an art form, West has seen his work acquired by prestigious collections of contemporary art, including that of Sir Elton John.
