Online: April 14 to May 21, 2026
The solo exhibition Herb Ritts: Sand in the CAMERA WORK Virtual Gallery brings together more than 25 works that explore the element of sand, offering a focused insight into the photographer’s oeuvre. The works – including iconic photographs such as Backflip and Woman in Sea – span the realms of fashion, portraiture, and nude photography, cementing Herb Ritts’ status as a defining figure of photographic art. A dedicated exhibition room is also devoted to Tatjana Patitz, illustrating the long-standing and intensive artistic collaboration between her and Herb Ritts.
In photographic art, sand acts as a multifaceted compositional element that structures pictorial space while simultaneously evoking a sense of calm and focus. By emphasizing surfaces, it subtly refers to aspects of time and transience. In his works, Herb Ritts utilizes sand as a formative element to further emphasize the sculptural aesthetics of the body.
Many of the featured works are represented in major international collections. Herb Ritts: Sand underscores the formal clarity and the enduring significance of this central motif within the oeuvre of Herb Ritts.
