Dean West: Escaramuza (Floor II)

Online: August 18 until September 29, 2026

Dean West turns with »Escaramuza« to the only women’s discipline within Charrería, Mexico’s national sport: in teams of eight, riding sidesaddle, the horsewomen execute choreographed maneuvers of utmost precision, dressed in elaborately embroidered gowns reminiscent of the Adelitas, the women of the Mexican Revolution. Dean West portrays them detached from any narrative setting: at the center of the frame, against a neutral background, reduced to their silhouette. The wide-brimmed hat deliberately conceals the face – it is not the individual who takes center stage, but what unites them all: the costume, in which the history, craftsmanship, and pride of an entire tradition are condensed.

A contemplative counterpoint is formed by works from the series »Ikebana«, in which Dean West turns in almost meditative stillness to the centuries-old Japanese art of flower arranging. However distant the two worlds may seem, at their core they tell the same story: of traditions in female hands, of discipline finding its form, and of beauty born of utmost precision. The exhibition is joined by two further works from the »American West« series.
