Yousuf Karsh

Yousuf Karsh, widely acknowledged as a master portrait photographer of the 20th century, first entered the field as a young Armenian immigrant to the US and Canada. He was quickly established as the prodigious creator of seminal portraits of the leading personalities of the day, from world leaders to film stars, distinguished by his mastery of lighting and uncanny ability to create the defining, iconic, image for each subject.

Karsh has been widely exhibited internationally for 8 decades, notably at London’s National Portrait Gallery on the occasion of his 100 birthday in 2008, at premier US institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Detroit Arts Institute, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Washington DC’s National Portrait Gallery, and worldwide at world capitals from Seoul to Paris.
