Cultural Dynamics: David Yarrow

David Yarrow’s Tribute to the Iconic Island of Capri

David Yarrow, renowned for his powerful visual storytelling, has fascinated the art world with his work, Capri. This special piece is currently on display as part of David Yarrow’s exhibition , which runs until November 23, 2024 at CAMERA WORK Gallery. This latest art presentation offers a rare glimpse into the soul of one of the world’s most legendary destinations.

Set against the iconic backdrop of the Faraglioni sea stacks, Capri reflects David Yarrow’s deep connection to the island’s timeless beauty and its storied past. Known for its allure since ancient times, Capri has long been a destination where nature, hedonism, and glamour collide. From the Greeks to Hollywood’s elite, visitors in search of an escape have been drawn to the island—a place where life’s pleasures are celebrated, and time seems to stand still. David Yarrow captures this essence in his work, immediately recognizing Capri’s unique aesthetic during his first visit in 2024. He recalls, »On my first visual exposure to the venue, I recognised that it was aesthetically without equal.«

The creation process

What makes Capri truly special is not only its breathtaking visual appeal but also the attention to detail and meticulous planning that went into its creation. David Yarrow had never been to Capri before, but when he saw the island, he knew he had to capture its beauty. Set against the Faraglioni, the work features the famous parasols of La Fontelina beach club. This location perfectly blends Capri’s raw natural charm with its sophisticated cultural heritage. To ensure the composition was flawless, David Yarrow worked closely with local fishermen to compose the foreground. Together they fine-tuned the scene to create the perfect balance between nature and human presence. Reflecting on this effort, he explains, »I had sensed some empty space in front of the southerly stack and worked with local fisherman to sort that out.« This careful orchestration adds to the photograph’s layered complexity, honoring the environment without overshadowing its beauty. The video below provides a deeper look into David Yarrow’s creative process.

Part of David Yarrow’s process was gaining the trust and support of La Fontelina’s owners, Gaetano and Mario Gargiulo, whose beach club plays a central role in the image. David Yarrow’s respect for the club and its history is evident in the care with which he approached the shoot, choreographing every element to elicit nostalgia and familiarity. The artwork is not just a depiction of a place but a carefully constructed scene meant to evoke deep emotions and memories for those who know the island well. David Yarrow emphasizes, »I like this photograph a great deal, but I care more that Gaetano and Mario want to hang it on their rustic wall at La Fontelina.«

A Celebration of Capri’s Enduring Spirit

For him, the success of Capri lies in its ability to resonate with those who understand and cherish the location as deeply as he now does.
The work is a celebration of the island’s enduring allure and an invitation for visitors to experience its magic firsthand. Through his distinctive point of view, Yarrow transforms Capri from a destination into an experience—a place where beauty, culture, and history converge in a single moment.
We invite you to visit CAMERA WORK Gallery and experience Capri in person. It’s more than just a photograph; it’s an homage to a place that has inspired countless stories—and it will undoubtedly inspire many more.
