Anton Corbijn (*1955 in Strijen) is a Dutch photographer, music video director and film director. For three decades, he has created promotional and cover photography for bands like U2 and Depeche Mode. Anton Corbijn began directing music videos in 1983 for artists such as Bryan Adams and Nirvana. He has directed more than 60 videos and photographed 100 album covers as well as for magazines such as »Esquire«, »Stern«, »Rolling Stone« and »Elle«.
Anton Corbijn is known as one of the most recognized portrait artists in the music industry. As iconic as his photographs have become, many of Anton Corbijn’s most resonant and lasting photographer-subject relationships were not just instant alliances. His intimate relationships to his subjects, such as Helena Christensen, bend the boundaries between a staged picture and authenticity, between fiction and reality.
Anton Corbijn understands the camera as a means to an end – ultimately, he tries to capture the personality and the character hidden deep within the person portrayed beyond any kind of superficial staging. Keith Richards once said: »All great photographers have a third eye. Anton Corbijn has three third eyes.« In the last years, Anton Corbijn also directed the movies »Control« (2007), »The American« (2010), »A Most Wanted Man« (2014) and »Life« (2015).
