Thomas Hoepker

Thomas Hoepker

Thomas Hoepker’s (*1936 in Munich) interest in photography developed early in his life as he already gained experience with this medium at the age of 14. He worked as a regular photographer for magazines and book publications from 1959 on, reporting from all over the world. In 1989 he became the first German member at Magnum Photos and even managed it as president from 2003 to 2007. Until today Thomas Hoepker’s work has been presented in many solo and group exhibitions. Since the 1960s his work has been published in more than a dozen books. Many iconic photographs we know of Muhammad Ali were taken by Thomas Hoepker, whereas he photographed him mostly out of the ring. The legendary work »Muhammad Ali Showing Off His Right Fist« from 1966 was shot while visiting Muhammad Ali’s studio in Chicago.

The artist has been living and working in New York since 1976.
