Lillian Bassman (1917-2012) was an American photographer and painter. She is one of the most influential photographers in the genre of fashion photography. Lillian Bassman's parents came from Russia and were Jewish intellectuals who immigrated into the United States in 1905. Grown up in Brooklyn and Greenwich Village in New York, she finished her graphic design studies at the Textile High School in Manhattan in 1933. Already at the age of six she became acquainted with her future husband Paul Himmel. In 1935, Lillian Bassman and Paul Himmel got married and soon became a glamorous New York artist duo – for both of them photography was their artistic expression. The artistic level between those two was characterized by creative tensions to create an outstanding photographic oeuvre that is timeless and modern at the same time. Lillian Bassman and Paul Himmel were married for 77 years. Paul Himmel died in 2009, Lillian Bassman passed away three years later in New York.
